Raftery, Ševčíková, and Silverman publish article about the Single Transferable Vote and other voting methods in R
Founding CSSS director Adrian Raftery, CSSS senior research scientist Hana Ševčíková, and their colleague Bernard W. Silverman have recently published an article in the R Journal titled, "The vote Package: Single Transferable Vote and Other Electoral Systems in R".
It describes the STV method and software that has been used for some of our faculty votes, as well as many other electoral systems. The STV method is also used by the IMS and the Royal Statistical Society, and the package described is an outgrowth of the code Silverman originally developed for RSS and IMS elections.
One aspect that might be of interest is that the software allows voters to express equal preferences. (The STV method usually requires voters to express unique preferences.) The basic STV principle carries over to this situation with no issues, but this is the first time it has been implemented in software, to the authors' knowledge.
