Education

Rationale

The major goal of the Education concentration in Statistics is to provide Education graduate students with a sophisticated toolkit of complementary quantitative skills for their graduate and post-graduate careers. The coursework includes both Education-specific classes offered through the Educational Psychology (EDPSY) Measurement and Statistics program (EDPSY) as well as classes through the Center for Statistics and the Social Sciences (CSSS). There is no cost to students beyond successfully completing coursework.

Requirements: 2 Advanced Courses in EDPSY + 4 Advanced Courses in CSSS + 1 CSSS Seminar

After taking multiple regression through EDPSY (EDPSY 539) or CSSS (CSSS 504), Education graduate students should take a minimum of two advanced psychometrics/applied analytics courses chosen from the EDPSY list below, as well as a minimum of four advanced 3-, 4-, or 5-credit courses in CSSS numbered 510 or higher (note that courses offered jointly between EDPSY and CSSS only count once). In addition, students must also attend at least one quarter of the CSSS 590 weekly seminar (offered throughout the academic year). Notably, courses taken from the EDPSY list can also count toward the EDPSY Psychometrics and Applied Analytics (PAA) certificate.

List of approved EDPSY or joint EDPSY/CSSS courses (2 required):

  • EDPSY 539: Classic Test Theory Reliability & Validity (pre-req for several courses)
  • EDPSY 558: Test Item Development
  • EDPSY 559: Validity Theory
  • EDPSY 561: Generalizability Theory
  • EDPSY 575: Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) I
  • EDPSY 576: Multilevel Modeling (MLM)
  • EDPSY 584: Specialized Topics in Quantitative Methods (can be repeated)
  • EDPSY 588: Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) II
  • EDPSY/CSSS 591: Item Response Theory (IRT) Modeling I
  • EDPSY 592: Item Response Theory (IRT) Modeling II
  • EDPSY 593: Cognitive Diagnostic Modeling
  • EDPSY 594: Computerized Adaptive Testing
  • EDPSY/CSSS 595: Monte Carlo Simulations
  • EDPSY 596: Experimental Design and Analysis
  • EDPSY 597: Network Measurement and Analysis

CSSS courses (4 required 3-, 4-, or 5-credit courses, numbered 510 or higher) can be found here.

Minimum Grade Point Average

Students must earn a minimum grade of 3.3 in each of their six selected courses.

Steps for Students
  1. Get registered! As soon as you become interested in pursuing the CSSS Education track (even if you’ve already taken a lot – or even all – of the courses), we encourage you to fill out our brief Registration form here. The information will be reviewed by the College of Education’s Director of Admissions and Enrollment and the Director of the EDPSY Measurement and Statistics program to ensure feasibility of course planning. After review, you will receive a registration confirmation email for your records.
  2. Complete classes! Complete your coursework as outlined above (2 courses from the EDPSY list, 4 courses from CSSS numbered 510 or higher, and 1 quarter of CSSS 590) with a minimum grade of 3.3 in each class.
  3. Award! After finishing coursework, you should fill out our brief Completion form here. This form will be reviewed by the College of Education’s Director of Admissions and Enrollment and the Director of the EDPSY Measurement and Statistics program; after checking all requirements have been met, your application for completion information will be shared with the CSSS program administrator and director for their review. Thereafter you will receive your CSSS Letter of Recognition via email. Note that completion forms are only processed during the academic year (not summer); as well, please allow approximately two weeks for processing time.
