Preprints

Book Chapter in Computational Demography and Health
Zack W. Almquist, Courtney Allen, Ihsan Kahveci
Recent developments in computing, data entry and generation, and analytic tools have changed the landscape of modern demography and health research. These…

Network Sampling Methods for Estimating Social Networks, Population Percentages, and Totals of People Experiencing Unsheltered Homelessness
Zack W. Almquist, Ashley Hazel, Owen Kajfasz, Janelle Rothfolk, Claire Guilmette, Mary-Catherine Anderson, Larisa Ozeryansky, Amy Hagopian
In this article, we propose using network-based sampling strategies to estimate the number of unsheltered people experiencing homelessness within a given…

Uncovering migration systems through spatio-temporal tensor co-clustering
Zack W. Almquist, Tri Duc Nguyen, Mikael Sorensen, Xiao Fu, Nicholas D. Sidiropoulos
A central problem in the study of human mobility is that of migration systems. Typically, migration systems are defined as a set of relatively stable movements…

Using social media to measure demographic responses to natural disaster: Insights from a large-scale Facebook survey following the 2019 Australia Bushfires
Paige Maas, Zack Almquist, Eugenia Giraudy, JW Schneider
In this paper we explore a novel method for collecting survey data following a natural disaster and then combine this data with device-derived mobility…

Spatial Heterogeneity Can Lead to Substantial Local Variations in COVID-19 Timing and Severity
Loring J. Thomas, Peng Huang, Fan Yin, Xiaoshuang Iris Luo, Zack W. Almquist, John R. Hipp, Carter T. Butts
Standard epidemiological models for COVID-19 employ variants of compartment (SIR) models at local scales, implicitly assuming spatially uniform local mixing…

Ensuring Reliable Monte Carlo Estimates of Network Properties
Haema Nilakanta, Zack W. Almquist, Galin L. Jones
The literature in social network analysis has largely focused on methods and models which require complete network data; however there exist many networks…

Stable Multiple Time Step Simulation/Prediction from Lagged Dynamic Network Regression Models
Abhirup Mallik, Zack W. Almquist
Recent developments in computers and automated data collection strategies have greatly increased the interest in statistical modeling of dynamic networks. Many…

Contending Parties: A Logistic Choice Analysis of Inter- and Intra-group Blog Citation Dynamics in the 2004 US Presidential Election
Zack W. Almquist, Carter T. Butts
The 2004 US Presidential Election cycle marked the debut of Internet-based media such as blogs and social networking websites as institutionally recognized…

Coarse-Grained Topology Estimation via Graph Sampling
Maciej Kurant, Minas Gjoka, Yan Wang, Zack W. Almquist, Carter T. Butts, Athina Markopoulou
Many online networks are measured and studied via sampling techniques, which typically collect a relatively small fraction of nodes and their associated edges…

Logistic Network Regression for Scalable Analysis of Networks with Joint Edge/Vertex Dynamics
Zack W. Almquist, Carter T. Butts
Network dynamics may be viewed as a process of change in the edge structure of a network, in the vertex set on which edges are defined, or in both…
