Abstract:
This seminar will introduce attendees to a new type of precision medicine tool, the polygenic risk score, and its use in managing risks of common chronic conditions. Drawing on her involvement with one national translational genomic research study, Dr. Fullerton will question the public health utility of these new tools and describe their problematic intersection with ascribed social identities, such as race/ethnicity, in clinical practice.
Stephanie Malia Fullerton, DPhil, is Professor in the UW Department of Bioethics and Humanities. She is also Adjunct Professor in the UW Departments of Epidemiology, Genome Sciences, and Medicine (Medical Genetics). Her work focuses on the ethical and social implications of genomic research and its equitable and safe translation for clinical and public health benefit.
